Pizza, Tacos, or Burgers for 25 Guests: A Cost and Effort Comparison
The three default party mains, compared with the same math for the same party.
Estimates based on USDA serving guidance and standard catering portions. See our method.
When a party crosses about twenty people, the menu conversation almost always collapses to the same three candidates: pizza, tacos, or burgers. All three are crowd-safe, all three scale, and all three have an obvious supply chain. But they are not interchangeable. We ran all three through our calculator for the same 25-guest party, at normal appetite, served as the main dish. Here is what the numbers say, and what the numbers cannot say.
The head-to-head numbers
| Main | You need | Serves | Total cost | Per guest |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ๐ Pizza | 10 large pizzas | 75 servings | $120 to $200 | $4.80 to $8 |
| ๐ฎ Taco | 75 tacos | 75 servings | $150 to $300 | $6 to $12 |
| ๐ Burger | 38 burgers | 38 servings | $114 to $228 | $4.56 to $9.12 |
On pure cost, burgers take this party size at $4.56 to $9.12 per guest. But the ranges overlap enough that cost alone should not decide it: a well-shopped version of the most expensive option can beat a carelessly shopped version of the cheapest. The differences that do not overlap are logistical, and those deserve more weight than they usually get.
Pizza: zero cooking, one phone call, least flexible
Pizza is the only one of the three that requires no cooking, no equipment, and no serving line: 10 large pizzas arrive, boxes open, party proceeds. For a host without kitchen help, that convenience is worth real money, and in our data it does not even carry a price premium: pizza's per-guest range of $4.80 to $8 has the lowest ceiling of the three. The trade-offs are flexibility, not cost: the order is locked in once placed, delivery fees and tips sit on top of the menu price, and one menu has to satisfy every diet in the room. Ordering tip from the math: 25 guests computes to 75 slices; confirm your shop's large is 8 slices, because a 6-slice large quietly turns 10 pizzas into too few.
Tacos: cheapest ingredients, most assembly
A taco bar for 25 computes to 75 tacos (about 3 per guest), and its ingredients (ground meat, tortillas, toppings) are grocery staples that scale cheaply. The hidden cost is labor: someone browns and seasons the meat, chops the toppings, and keeps the bar stocked during the party. A taco bar also carries the most leftovers-friendly profile of the three, since unassembled components store and reheat well. Choose tacos when you have an hour of prep time and want the most food per dollar; avoid them when the host is also the only cook.
Burgers: the crowd-pleaser that needs a grill master
Burgers have the widest cost swing of the three: $4.56 to $9.12 per guest for 38 patties plus buns, the lowest floor in this comparison and nearly the highest ceiling, depending entirely on the beef you buy. They are also highest on ceremony: live fire, a cooking window that coincides exactly with the party, and one person committed to the grill for a solid stretch. For 25 guests, even a grill that fits a dozen patties at once means 4 full rounds, so stagger service or guests eat in shifts. Burgers reward parties that are outdoors anyway (the grill is the entertainment) and punish indoor parties that just wanted an easy main.
The hybrid option worth pricing
At 25 guests you are close to the size where two smaller mains beat one large one, because variety absorbs mixed preferences and each dish gets the serving-with-other-food reduction. Our pre-built combination calculators run that math for the classic pairings:
- ๐๐ Pizza and Wings: The ultimate game day and party combo. Pizza and wings are the most popular pairing for watch parties, game nights, and casual gatherings.
- ๐๐ญ Burgers and Hot Dogs: The classic American cookout combo. Burgers and hot dogs together give guests options and make your grill master job easier.
- ๐ฎ๐ง Tacos and Nachos: The perfect Mexican food combo for fiestas. Set up a taco bar with nachos as an appetizer or side, and your guests will love it.
How to decide in one minute
Order pizza when convenience is the constraint. Build tacos when budget is the constraint and prep hands exist. Grill burgers when the party is outdoors and the grill is part of the fun. Whichever way you lean, run your real head count through the pizza, taco, or burger calculator, set the appetite level honestly, and mark whether sides are sharing the table.
