Party Food at 30, 75, and 100 Guests: What Scales
We ran every active food on the site through the calculator's own math at 30, 75, and 100 guests to see what actually holds steady per guest, and what doesn't.

For most party foods, quantity and cost per guest scale exactly linearly from 30 to 75 to 100 guests: order proportionally more and you pay proportionally more per head. The exceptions are foods sold in large multi-serving units, like pizza, and any food with a fractional per-person serving size. On our own data, 75 guests turns out to be the size most likely to trigger rounding overage of the three, not 30 and not 100, which is the opposite of what most hosts would guess.
Does food actually scale linearly as a party gets bigger?
Mostly, yes, but not evenly across sizes. We computed every one of the 29 active foods on the site at 30, 75, 100 guests and checked how far the purchased amount overshoots the exact amount needed. "Near-linear" here means the overshoot is under 1% of demand, essentially rounding noise. At 30 guests, 23 of 29 foods are near-linear. At 75 guests that count drops to 18. At 100 guests it climbs back up to 28, the cleanest of the three sizes. If scaling got steadily better with size, you'd expect that number to rise the whole way from 30 to 100. It doesn't: it dips at 75 first.
The reason is arithmetic, not food. Our calculator rounds the exact serving need up to a whole purchase unit twice: once when a fractional per-person amount doesn't divide evenly into your guest count, and again when the purchase unit itself holds more than one serving. A guest count only avoids both kinds of rounding when it happens to be a clean multiple of the relevant fractions and unit sizes, and 75 clears fewer of those than 30 or 100 do among the foods on this site.
Which foods scale perfectly no matter the size?
17 of the 29 active foods stay within 1% of their
exact per-guest amount at all three sizes: taco, wing, burger, hot dog, nacho plate, salad, cake, fried chicken,
and others. These share one trait: their purchase unit holds exactly one serving
( servingsPerUnit: 1) and their per-person amount is a whole or
half-friendly number that clears 30, 75, and 100 without a remainder. Order double the
wings for double the guests and you pay almost exactly double, at every size we tested.
The foods that break that pattern fall into two groups. The first is large multi-serving units: pizzas (8 servings per large pizza) and ribs (12 servings per rack) both round up in noticeable chunks because a single extra unit adds many servings at once. The second is any food with a fractional per-person amount, like mac and cheese at 0.75 servings per person: even though it's purchased one serving at a time, 0.75 times an arbitrary guest count is rarely a whole number, so the calculator still rounds up before you ever reach the purchase-unit step.
Why does 75 guests round worse than 30 or 100?
At 30 guests, 6 foods land at 1% overage or worse, tied for worst between pizza and guacamole at 6.7% each. At 75 guests, that count jumps to 11 foods. At 100 guests it falls to just 1. The number 100 is divisible by 4, so any food serving in quarter-portions (0.25, 0.5, 0.75 per person) purchases a whole number of servings with no rounding at all. Seventy-five is divisible by 3 but not 4, so quarter-portion foods still round there, and its 12-serving pack size (ribs) and 4-serving pack size (quesadillas) don't divide it evenly either, while they divide both 30 and 100 cleanly.
The practical takeaway isn't that 75-guest parties cost more per head across the board; most of these overages are small. It's that the size of your guest list, not just the food you pick, determines whether you land on a clean multiple or a rounded-up one. If your count is flexible by a guest or two and you're ordering something with a large pack size, it's worth checking whether nudging the count to the nearest multiple of the pack size saves you a whole unit.

Read pizza's row across: per-guest cost drops from $4.80-$8 at 30 guests to $4.56-$7.60 at 100 guests, purely because the rounding overage shrinks from 6.7% to 1.3% as the order size grows relative to the 8-slice pack. Wings and cake barely move at all across the same range, because there's nothing left to round. Ribs and quesadillas actually cost slightly more per guest at 75 than at either 30 or 100, for the divisibility reason explained above.
What does a full menu cost at each size?
Combining pizzas, wings, mac and cheese servings, and cake slices into one spread shows the same pattern at a whole-menu level. At 30 guests it runs $12.07 to $23.93 per guest. At 75 it's $11.91 to $23.64. At 100 it settles at $11.81 to $23.48, the lowest per-guest figure of the three. The drop from 30 to 100 guests is small, under a dollar a head, and it comes almost entirely from the pizza line item losing its rounding overage as the order gets larger. Sides and dessert in this menu barely contribute to the difference at all.

What this means for planning your next big party
Don't expect a bigger party to automatically get cheaper per head; for most of the menu it won't, because most foods here already scale linearly and have no overage left to shed. Where it's worth checking is anything bought in a large multi-serving pack, like whole pizzas or ribs: look at how close your guest count sits to a clean multiple of the pack size, since landing just past one costs you most of an extra unit for almost no extra servings. And treat whatever rounding overage you do end up with as your buffer for seconds and late arrivals rather than adding a separate 10-15% on top of an already-rounded number.
